Skin and The Soul Within – Conscious Connecting
We are all taught at college about how to create professional boundaries, although it takes a bit of real life before we start to understand the full implications of this advice. When I left college, I gave my all to every client, exhaustion naturally ensued. A reiki course led to a different approach, the energy of the Universe boosting whatever last night’s sleep had made available; but still, a day’s work left a minimum of six individuals swirling exhaustingly in my soul!
The skin and soul are intimately connected. I remember so clearly my first learning of this. A client requested I help with the terrible acne scaring on her back. Hardened scar tissue can be difficult to reduce however, during a turning-point session the scars started to soften and reveal the soft skin beneath. I felt so happy with the progress that was made.
Later that evening I received a phone call from my client. Anger was pouring out from her. The client told me that the time in her life when the scaring was created had been extraordinarily difficult, and the skincare work had taken her back there. She felt I had no right to do this. I was rocked and deeply upset. Shocked not only to suddenly lose a client I felt a strong connection to, but that my work on her skin had opened-up her memories. It seemed that softening the scars in her skin had also softened the scars in her soul.
I didn’t expect to see her for her next appointment but she arrived. I learned that she had been through a very painful few days, but that she was very grateful. She became one of my longest standing and most loyal clients, and directly and indirectly, she would go on to teach me many more important lessons in skincare.
I have worked with Sebastian Parsons (the distributor of Dr.Hauschka in the UK from 1994 to 2013) since 1998. Together we had developed a programme of training for the brand’s therapists and sales team, and during that journey we had often discussed what we would do if we could take our insights further afield. Later, it seemed only logical to found the Skin and the Soul Within school of holistic skincare, to do just that!
Our foundation training is called “Conscious Connecting” and equips the therapist with techniques and understanding that allow them to become more effective in their work. Our focus is on the many connections that are involved in our work. The first and perhaps most obvious being the contact of therapist’s hands on client’s skin. More fundamental, but less obvious and less supported by training is the personal relationship of the therapist with the client.
In addition to our conscious approach to quality of touch, as holistic therapists, we know that the relationship with the skincare products we choose to use is also fundamental to the success of our work.
The school, although not based in a skincare brand, chooses to use the Martina Gebhardt biodynamic range. Biodynamic cultivation has grown in popularity because it grows more potent ingredients. The vitality and healing quality of the plant is alive in the skincare preparations resulting in highly effective skin treatments.
For a holistic and spiritually aware system, it is perhaps ironic that biodynamics is most famous for wine! The reason is obvious – in wine making the taste of the grape is paramount – and biodynamic methods transform the connection of farmer with plant, and plant with soil, releasing the full and unique “taste” of the vineyard into the grapes. Conscious connection is transformative, for a farmer, for a therapist, for everyone.
