If one item of body care is indispensable during the summer months, (actually, during the whole year!) then it’s a deodorant. So, what do we look for in a good deodorant? Most importantly, it has to be effective – but there are also many other very important considerations. Aluminum salts are a health no-no, yet most conventional deodorants (in stick, roll-on and spray form) still use them. Having said that, many 100% natural deodorants leave a lot to be desired when it comes to long lasting protection and even having a nice scent. But do you always have to compromise on quality if you want to buy natural? Our cosmetic gurus Julia, Ida and Jenny have been testing three of the deodorants from Speick to find out.
Julia and the Thermal Sensitive Deodorant Stick
The Product: The newest deodorant in the Speick range, the Thermal Sensitive deo stick is BDIH and COSMOS natural certified, so you know for sure that it is 100% natural with no nasties at all. So, how does it work? The deodorant contains sage extract, which inhibits perspiration, while natural fragrances such as farnesol, keep the body odor at bay. A little alcohol works in conjunction with the obligatory Speick extract to preserve the product, and the Speick extract gives the distinctive citrus fresh notes in the fragrance. (And of course there are no aluminum salts.)
The test: The big test of the Thermal Sensitive deo stick came when I took a weekend break at the lakes, where it would have to survive busy town excursions, walks and swimming. Well what can I say other than I now always have this deodorant to hand!
Conclusion: Deo Sticks offer many advantages; for one thing, you don’t have to wait after application for it to dry, which saves valuable time in the morning. An even bigger benefit however, is that the active ingredients adhere better (because of the creamy-waxy texture) to the skin and thereby keep you fresh for longer. On my trip it was really hot, and I was constantly in and out of the lake, despite this I didn’t have to re-apply. For the most long-lasting impact, I recommend to not apply this deodorant sparingly, ie ride the stick under your arm 3 or 4 times. This deodorant is perfect for those who can not tolerate alcohol or baking soda based deodorants, or simply those who have sensitive skin – the deodorant doesn’t even burn when applied directly after shaving! As it is so gracefully narrow, the Deo stick is also just the right size to fit in any pocket!
Ida and the Men Active Deo Stick
The product: If you could lure me into using a deodorant with only one ingredient, then it would be sage. I love this native plant because of it’s protective qualities – and not only against a sore throat! The scent of this deodorant is quite sharp and citrusy, but at the same time fresh and not too intense – and I would say suitable for both women and men. Just like the Thermal Sensitive Deodorant Stick, the Men Active is vegan and BDIH certified, and is based on a mixture of plant components, wet care components and liquid wax.
The test: I have been using the Men Active deo stick for a few weeks now. During this time it has faced several challenges! From a hike in the highlands to stressful meetings, wild dancing at family gatherings and sweaty exercise on the sports field. The only thing missing is (perhaps) the toughest test: temperatures above 30 degrees. The chances are however that in the coming week I will also be able to test this. I particularly like the uncomplicatedness of deo sticks. The consistency also allows a quick application, and leaves a pleasant feeling in the armpit without sticking. Another plus for me (as I’m so impatient!): I can immediately slip into my top, without having to wait. Since the stick also is quite narrow compared to a glass roll-on bottle, I can always have it hidden in my bag.
Conclusion: The Speick Men Active deo stick Active has not yet let me down, and kept me reliably fresh from morning to evening. We’ll see if it will stand up to the test of high summer temperatures, but I suspect it will! If you like citrusy, herby and fresh scents and appreciate having a straightforward deo stick, I would instantly recommend this product, whether you are male or female!
Jenny and Natural Active Deo Roll-on
The product: Natural Freshness in a bottle! The Speick Natural Active Deo Roll-on carries the BDIH seal for certified natural cosmetics, and is completely free of aluminium salts and other nasties. The deodorant works using deodorizing organic sage in combination with fragrances from essential oils, and skin-softening Calendula. The herby notes of the fragrance are accentuated by extracts of high alpine Speick extract from biologically regulated wild harvesting.
The test: The Speick Natural Active Deo roll-on was really put to the test and was allowed to fully demonstrate its long-term effects! It had to cope with me working 3 hours in the stables, followed by 5 hours in the office and long afternoons doing essential maintenance and other strenuous preparation work for a stable in the German Equestrian Federation – certainly a challenge!
Conclusion: The Natural Active deodorant passed with flying colors! After only two up and down rolls in the morning, the protection was still very good even after 8 hours. I did add an extra layer in the sun, especially when working on the farm. On “normal” days without stress and stifling summer heat, I found it completely sufficient to apply the deodorant once a day. Despite the use of alcohol, I found the Speick Natural Active roll-on deodorant was very mild on my skin. It is ideal for those who appreciate a felling of pure freshness without creamy consistencies found on deo sticks. And how I love herby, citrusy, invigorating scents! I would say that the roll-on is absolutely fine for men and women as well, so don’t hold back!
